High Definition Content Playback on the Intel Mac Mini

I came across this blog about the Mac Mini's ability to play high definition content. It is not a "how to" but rather theory behind the feasibility of HD playback and future improvements that could be made to increase HD playback capability.

A good post. It's kind of disappointing though that the mini can just barely handle the playing of a high bandwidth 1080p image. What happens if you're trying to record & stream or make some other major demands on the system? Seems like an h.264 encode/decode off-load chip would make a huge difference here. I wonder if apple would ever add something like that into the AppleTV?

At least you know that the Mini can handle the biggest single thing you could throw at it. My concern is around what happens when you want to do more than one thing at once.

But is 1080p really an issue for the near future for you or I. Neither of us have TVs that can handle 1080p. Nor will we have one in the next 3+ years at least.

The thing about most of these htpc applications is that they are setup so you can't really do multiple things at once. Once you go full screen on FrontRow or XBMC you can not use spaces or widgets or anything like that. From what I have read, the only way to access apps/features outside of pf the htpc app is to completely exit the app.
