Can't stream network media to PSP

So I found out today that you can only stream media to your PSP if it is physically on your PS3 hard drive. I have to think that it's a matter of time until someone figures a way to get around this. What about connecting a large external drive to your PS3 and having all your media reside there? I found this post on PS3forums.com talking about connecting external drives to the PS3.

This of course brings up a few questions. The main one being, if all of my media resides on a external drive connected to the PS3, can I still access that media on my network? If my only goal is to be able to access my media anywhere with a PSP then this may be a good idea. However, I like to have all of my data organized and a traditional file server that can be accessed anywhere in my house seems like the better thing to do.

I'll have to read that article to see what they say about external drives. I wonder if PS3 has a way to share-out files. They must if PSP reads the files. There may be a way to stream the files from the PS3, making it your central file server instead of your PC

So, I watched this ghetto tutorial on how to connect an external SATA drive to your PS3:

There are a couple of interesting things to note here. First, this guy has never heard of a tripod. Second, the internal hard drive in the PS3 is a SATA 2.5" drive. The connector is in a position where your hand can just barely reach. But if you can reach it apparently you can get a SATA extension cable and plug it in so that you can connect a larger and faster external SATA drive. What the guy in the demo didn't know is that there is another wafer connector next to the data connector for power. Even external SATA drives take the new wafer connector for power. So he probably could have tapped into that as well. The advantage here is that you would only have to power on/off the PS3 and not an external enclosure. I'm not positive it would work, but it seems plausible.

Too lazy to read all the posts, here's my suggestion. What i do (hopefully this is what you need) is to have all of my media on my Mac (PC works better) and from there i set it up to stream it to the PS3 with MediaLink (Windows media player on my PC), then I connect my PSP to my PS3 using the remote play feature. From there i can do everything but play PS3 titles or watch DVD's inserted in the drive. But you can watch the saved files on your PS3's hard drive and the streaming media from your PC or Mac, you can send messages, you can go into folding at home, but coolest of all, you can turn on your PS3 remotely from anywhere there's an internet connection and you're connected to it with your PSP, obviously.
